I found out on my research how to use the shutter speed on this type of camera although most places i looke clearly stated i should just simply read the manual that comes with the camera. However i have found some understanding of the camera in this quote:

'This is a basic function of the camera, if you cannot find this then you really should be reading the manual as it means you will probably have other settings incorrect too.

The simple answer to your question (though if you are unfamiliar with the camera your results will marred by any other incorrect settings), is that if you put the camera into "P"rogram, Tv shutter priority, or "M"anual you have direct access to the shutter speed via the dial just behind the shutter release.

If you need to use the camera NOW, and don't have time to read the manual at this time, you are going to have to stick to it's Auto settings and special scene settings - these won't give you ultimate flexibility though.'
